Beyond the United States
Kratom around the world
Kratom is a Southeast Asian tree, and the regulatory picture varies widely by region. This is a broad snapshot to orient readers outside the US — not a substitute for verifying current law before travelling with, ordering, or possessing kratom in any jurisdiction.
Thailand
Kratom was re-legalised for adult use in 2021 after nearly eight decades of prohibition. Licensed cultivation is expanding, and the domestic market has re-emerged alongside the export trade.
Indonesia
The world’s largest producer by volume, with most cultivation concentrated in West and Central Kalimantan. Legal for cultivation and export today; the National Narcotics Board has periodically discussed reclassification, and the picture continues to evolve.
Malaysia
Controlled under the Poisons Act. Traditional use in rural communities persists, but supply and possession outside of narrow research contexts remain restricted.
United Kingdom
Kratom falls under the 2016 Psychoactive Substances Act, which prohibits supply. Personal possession is not itself criminalised, but domestic sale is.
European Union
Status is decided at the member-state level, and adult purchase is permitted in much of the bloc — Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, and several others treat kratom as an unregulated botanical. A smaller group (Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Sweden) restricts or schedules it.
Australia & New Zealand
Both classify kratom under their controlled-substances frameworks. Possession generally requires medical authorisation and personal import is restricted.
Canada
Legal to possess and use. Health Canada has not approved kratom as a Natural Health Product, so it can be sold as raw botanical material but not marketed with health claims.
Elsewhere
Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Israel, the UAE, and Russia all classify kratom or its principal alkaloids as controlled. Most of Central and South America has no specific scheduling.
